Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short is a term used within the telecom industry describing the delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet.

VoIP takes advantage of converging technologies such as high-speed broadband connections and faster data compression to send more voice and video down existing copper wires and fibre connections.

As an open source standard VoIP is an unlicensed technology and therefore inexpensive to implement, as such there are a multitude of product offerings available and many businesses looking to cut costs or increase line capacity and functionality within existing installations are turning to VoIP.

VoIP has many benefits over traditional hardwired PBX networks because it is often integrated into your existing data lines. Voice traffic is digitised compressed and sent in secure IP data packets and routed in a similar way to internet based traffic, usually to a centralised server co-located in a secure data centre.

By utilising existing data lines such as high speed broadband or leased lines and centralising the service outside of the organisation results in reduced cost on hardware installation and flexibility when changing services, the system can scale up or down with your organisation with little or no disruption to service.

We also offer VoIP via SIP Trunking, SIP Trunking is typically used as an ISDN replacement service and is a bridge for customers with legacy PBX systems allowing them to integrate modern VoIP calls into their existing communications plan without decommissioning and replacing their legacy PBX or IP-PBX infrastructures.

By using a SIP Trunking solution a customer can also use their existing analogue or digital headsets, the only requirement is the integration of a Media Gateway appliance to digitise the call traffic into SIP, and route this over IP. Alternatively an IP-PBX can be linked directly into BT’s platform to carry the VoIP traffic, providing it is on the Authorised Equipment list and has been fully tested.

SIP Trunks are an ideal solution for a small to medium size enterprise that has recently invested in a traditional PBX solution or wishes to continue using their existing equipment until they are comfortable with VoIP as a primary telephony service.

A major benefit with linking sites or home workers over a geographic distance via VoIP is that calls between them are often routed directly and are therefore free utilising existing broadband or other data network connections.
