SIP Trunks

A SIP Trunking solution is a service offered by an Internet Telephony Service Provider or ITSP for short. The service permits businesses that have a PBX installed to use Voice-over-IP (VoIP) via a DSL or Ethernet connection whilst enabling full PSTN connectivity.

SIP Trunking is typically used as an ISDN replacement service and is a bridge for customers with legacy PBX systems allowing them to integrate modern VoIP calls into their existing communications plan without decommissioning and replacing their legacy PBX or IP-PBX infrastructures.

By using a SIP Trunking solution a customer can also use their existing analogue or digital headsets, the only requirement is the integration of a Media Gateway appliance to digitise the call traffic into SIP, and route this over IP. Alternatively an IP-PBX can be linked directly into BT’s platform to carry the VoIP traffic, providing it is on the Authorised Equipment list and has been fully tested.

Voice traffic is converted to IP data packets and so can be routed across any IP network, typically this would be a broadband line that is either dedicated to the service or if bandwidth allows the line can be shared with existing data traffic such as internet and email.

SIP Trunks are an ideal solution for a small to medium size enterprise that has recently invested in a traditional PBX solution or wishes to continue using their existing equipment until they are comfortable with VoIP as a primary telephony service.
