Broadband is faster and more affordable than ever, and with new technologies such as bonded ADSL, SDSL, Ethernet based Leased Lines and fibre it is becoming increasingly complex to find the best solution for your needs.
Crown Telecom Solutions not only understand the broadband business and its emerging technologies but also share the vision of how superfast broadband and other data lines can be used to facilitate improved productivity and reductions in the costs of other business communications.
There are a number of different broadband connections available nearly of which can be used for both data, video and voice communications.
ADSL or asymmetric digital subscriber line is currently the dominant broadband connectivity in the UK, it was selected and introduced by BT because of its ability to use existing copper network cabling infrastructure by transmitting a high frequency carrier data signal whist still allowing the line to be utilised for traditional analogue voice. ADSL by nature allows for quicker downstream data speed than upstream and was classed as ideal fit for consumers, it has since been refined and improved and is now reaching speeds many times faster than its introduction rate. The current rate of speed for most users is up to 8mb; however some providers are able to offer rates of up to 24mb in selected areas.
SDSL or symmetric digital subscriber line is a sister technology to ADSL and provides similar connectivity, a key difference is that the upstream and downstream is symmetrical and so speeds are on balance the same both uploading and downloading data, as such SDSL has been mainly targeted at small to medium sized enterprises.
An emerging technology in the UK, mainly because carriers are still reliant on copper based wiring infrastructure. Fibre Optic connections transmit digital data via light down a glass tube about the thickness of a human hair, the signal does not degrade and it is able to achieve much faster transmission speeds over vast distances. Coverage of fibre is still in its infancy and is limited to densely populated areas.
A dedicated telecommunications line typically connecting two locations, it is also known, as a private circuit because of its un-contended nature, the circuit is not shared with other parties. The advantage of a leased line is speed, security and stability; it is a dedicated always on data line providing symmetrical data flow and usually terminates with an Ethernet connection and because the line doesn’t carry anyone else’s communications the carrier can often provide a service level agreement. Leased lines a premier connectivity service ideal for organisations wishing to consolidate data and voice connectivity over a secure, fast and reliable private line.
Organisations will often find themselves requiring more bandwidth than a single broadband line will provide but higher bandwidth connections such as leased lines are beyond the reach of their budget.
An alternative (and much less costly) solution is to combine multiple slower Internet connections using bandwidth aggregation. Invariably this utilises inexpensive ADSL or SDSL lines and a specific routing appliance to bond the lines into a single virtual connection, often called ‘Bonded DSL’, ‘Teaming’ or ‘Connection Teaming’.
Bonding inexpensive DSL lines into a single virtual connection also provides a level or resilience; if one or more lines in the bond fail the other lines will continue to operate at albeit at reduced speed.
This technology is based on IP Failover, and can be used to provide further backup to an Ethernet Leased Line which often carry critical communications, in the event of an outage on the Leased line circuit the communications automatically switch to the backup circuit, typically a DSL or Bonded DSL connection. Upon correction of the Leased Line the communications switch back. This provides a seamless backup solution with no interruption of service.
